The path of love requires self-emptying.

“Love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting nothing back; then your reward will be great and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.”
How’s this working for you?
This is one of the key teachings of Jesus and probably one of the most ignored.
It’s hard and sometimes seemingly impossible. But Jesus practiced what he preached.
When hanging on the cross, he asked God to forgive his unrepentant murderers: “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34).
In today’s world…look at all the vitriol over who is right and who is wrong. This is caused by egomania run amok.
Disagreements over ideas turn into rage and ostracizing those who think differently.
But Jesus says we should love those people…even the ones who might hate us!
This is the example Jesus set for us to follow…but how blatantly we have ignored this teaching!
To be a follower of Jesus…we must love everyone.
We must grapple with this…not so we can feel guilty when we fail or to fear punishment for failing…but so we can be transformed for the better…so we can spiritually grow.
This is a matter of the heart…not the head. As St. Paul says, “knowledge inflates with pride, but love builds up” (1 Corinthians 8:1). It’s time to build up.
Jesus warned his followers that they would be persecuted…so we can count on that.
This doesn’t mean we have to roll over and be walked on. It means to both stand up for what you believe is right…and to be loving at the same time.
It’s a tall order.
But love changes hearts and changes lives.
Can we actually love our persecutors? It will require letting go of our egos and asking for the grace to take part in the building of the kingdom of God.
The world desperately needs this radical change!
