The scribe said to Jesus, “Well said, teacher. You are right in saying, ‘(God) is One and there is no other than he.’ And ‘to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself’ is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” And when Jesus saw that he answered with understanding, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.”
The scribe had asked Jesus what the greatest commandment was and Jesus had answered that it was to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and to love your neighbor as yourself. How are you doing with that? Jesus is interested in each of us being transformed through God’s unconditional love and forgiveness…not through our own doing (sacrifices). God’s love is freely given…not earned. When we experience this flow of receiving and giving love…that is when we begin to experience the kingdom of God. Each of us has to take this greatest commandment to heart. If all we did was live out that greatest commandment in each moment…we would be “not far from the kingdom of God.”
