Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples.” He said to them, “When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.”
The disciples must have been impressed as they watched Jesus pray in quiet solitude. They wanted to know how they could have the same intimate connection with God. In Matthew’s gospel account, Jesus first tells them to go to their inner room, close the door and pray to God in secret (Matthew 6:6). But most people still have trouble with such “listening” prayer…as did the disciples. So Jesus gave them words to say…the prayer known as the “Our Father.” While we can all rattle-off the words to the prayer, we might ask ourselves if we truly mean what we are saying. By the way each of us lives our lives…are we cooperating with God’s desire that His “kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven”? This is not a passive waiting for some future heaven…but a call to active participation in cooperating with God in bringing the kingdom…into the present.
