Everything Belongs

Luke 19:5-7

Jesus looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.” And he came down quickly and received him with joy. When they all saw this, they began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner.”

+++

Zacchaeus wanted to get a glimpse of Jesus as he passed by with a crowd of followers…but because Zacchaeus was short in stature…he climbed a tree to be able to get a look.

Zacchaeus was described as a “chief tax collector” and a “wealthy man.”

He was quite the sinner in the eyes of the Jews.

They would not have associated with him.

Jesus could have simply ignored him, lectured him on his wrongdoings, or he could have organized an “anti-Zacchaeus demonstration” at his home.

But instead…Jesus reached out to Zacchaeus and invited himself to the tax collector’s house to stay with him.

Is this how we treat someone we disagree with?

Or do we shun and ridicule such people?

Due to Jesus’ visit and dialogue with Zacchaeus…he changed his ways.

Perhaps we should re-think how we treat those whom we disagree with or who don’t live up to our standards.

Let It Be Done to Me

If you want to grow…you have to be willing to change.

Luke 18:41-43

Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” He replied, “Lord, please let me see.” Jesus told him, “Have sight; your faith has saved you.” He immediately received his sight and followed him, giving glory to God.

+++

Interesting question from Jesus to a blind man, isn’t it?

What do you want me to do for you?

The blind man had been calling out to Jesus to “have pity on me.” Jesus showed great humility and respect in not taking for granted that he already knew what the man wanted.

So…what do you want Jesus to do for you?

Is what you want something you really need for your wholeness and goodness?

Contemplate that question in the silence of your heart.

The blind man had faith that Jesus would provide him what he needed.

He also had the courage to step out of his comfort zone and ask Jesus for help.

Then in response to receiving his sight…he followed Jesus “giving glory to God.”

Do we have the courage to step out of our comfort zones, call out to Jesus and boldly ask him to help us?

We can either accept the status quo in our lives and remain stuck in our spiritual growth…or we can follow Jesus on the path to our true selves and enlightenment.

That path won’t be easy…but will lead you to peace and freedom.

Psalm 19:2

The heavens declare the glory of God; the sky proclaims its builder’s craft.

+++

Take a look at a beautiful blue morning sky or a clear night sky glimmering with stars.

Take a look at all the marvels of nature surrounding you.

Look beyond the skies to the vast universe.

The Great Artisan is still at work…creating

You and I are a part of God’s beloved Creation.

How are we responding with our gifts and talents to work with God in creating this unfolding masterpiece?

How are we proclaiming our builder’s craft?

We do it by simply being our true selves.

We are loved by our Creator for simply being us.

We don’t have to do anything to earn God’s love.

We are loved just as we are.

When we live in this awareness…that is when God’s glory shines!

Grace Happens

Luke 17:20-21

Asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, he said in reply, “The coming of the kingdom of God cannot be observed, and no one will announce, ‘Look, here it is,’ or, ‘There it is.’ For behold, the kingdom of God is among you.”

+++

For Jesus…the “kingdom of God” was a present matter…not a future one.

Unlike many Christians today, Jesus did not seem to be preoccupied with getting to heaven one day.

He seemed to be much more preoccupied with getting to heaven now.

Now is where you will find the kingdom of God if you are present to it.

Christ is present in the person next to you and in nature that surrounds you.

How are you present to that Presence?

How are you present to the Presence of God within you?

I once heard a college student give a presentation about five medical mission trips he’d been on to Haiti, Honduras, and South Sudan. He said that he used to be preoccupied with video games and other idle pursuits of fun…until going on a mission trip that he really didn’t want to go on.

When he met face to face with an impoverished child in need…his pursuits changed.

He realized a greater purpose for his life.

Now his mission is to help people.

No one announced the kingdom of God to him…it simply appeared when he reached out in compassion to an impoverished child.

I call this a “Christ encounter”. It’s life changing.

Are you open to such an encounter?

Awaken

Wisdom 6:11

Desire therefore my words; long for them and you shall be instructed.

+++

In any close relationship we have intimate, two-way conversations.

Do you have such a relationship with God?

Or is it a one-way line of communication with you doing all the talking…and no listening?

I believe that our Creator yearns to speak to us in our hearts and is always speaking.

God’s words come to us in many ways: through silent meditation, reflective scripture reading, nature, people, music, art, books, etc., etc., etc.

But the question is: Are we listening?

Try taking some quiet time to simply sit in the presence of God.

God is present…but many times we are not!

Our minds are constantly chattering.

Stop and observe your mind’s endless commentary and judgments.

Allow it to cease.

Practice being still.

Be present to the Divine Presence in times of silence and times of activity…and then listen to your heart.

Make Your Music

sunrise_bird_horizon

May your life be a song of praise to God.

(Listen to my song “Sing a New Song” on YouTube by clicking HERE)

+++

Psalm 98:4

Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth; break into song; sing praise.

+++

All the earth (and universe) is continuously being filled by God’s life-giving energy.

Grace abounds!

Love is perpetually being poured out.

All creation returns this love by giving back all that it is…by being itself to the fullest.

We as humans seem to be the only created creatures that have a choice as to how respond to such Unconditional Love.

As St. Irenaeus said, “The glory of God is the human person fully alive.”

How are we being “fully alive”?

When we drop all our masks…all the pretenses and ego-created constructs.

When we receive God’s love and then share it with the world…we live as our true selves and our lives become songs of praise.

Sing your song.
